Ninety percent of the 12,100 nuclear warheads in the world as of January 2024 are under Russian and American hands. Although it has decreased since the Cold War, nuclear power is still dominated by the US and Russia.
There are good reasons on both sides of the complex debate over whether nuclear weapons pose a menace to the entire world or are a vital deterrent. Given that the US and Russia own the great majority of nuclear weapons, some contend that their existence poses a serious threat to international security and could result in unintentional or deliberate use with disastrous results. According to some, nuclear weapons act as a deterrence, averting major wars and preserving the balance of power among states.
