India Emerges as the Leading Milk Producer Globally: Progress, Obstacles, and Aspirations for the Future

India has positioned itself as the world’s top milk producer, currently generating 239 million metric tons (MMT) of milk. Rajiv Ranjan Singh, the Union Minister of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, shared in the Lok Sabha that the nation aims to boost its milk production to 300 MMT over the next five years. This growth is primarily driven by the Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM), which was launched in 2014.

The dairy sector in India has seen remarkable development, establishing the country as the leading milk producer globally. India contributes more than 24% of the world’s total milk supply. The average daily milk consumption per person in India is 471 grams, significantly higher than the global average.
