Dragon and Elephant Dance: What China’s Proposal Means

Amid the US ‘Tariff War,’ the Chinese Minister says, “Let Us Make Elephant, Dragon Dance” The Chinese Foreign Minister stated that “making the dragon and elephant dance (is) a reality that is the only right choice” following a meeting of the National People’s Congress.

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged Beijing and New Delhi to cooperate and “take the lead in opposing hegemonism and power politics” on Friday as tensions between the two countries increase, especially after the US increased tariffs on Chinese imports to 20%.

Mr. Wang stated that “making the dragon and elephant dance is the only right choice” following a meeting of the National People’s Congress. He additionally stated, “Supporting, instead of wearing each other down, and strengthening cooperation, instead of guarding (against) each other, is in our fundamental interests.”

Additionally, he stated that the “democratization of international relations and development and strengthening of ‘Global South’ will have a brighter future'” if the two biggest economies in Asia were to merge.

This statement has not yet received a response from India.

On Thursday, however, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar stated that the Indian government is collaborating with China to chart “a more predictable and positive course” for the relationship. This will involve direct flights, journalist exchanges, and the resumption of pilgrimages to locations under Chinese control.

Trump’s tariffs
In the second Trump administration, tariffs have become a hot topic because the president is perceived as using them—or the prospect of them—to intimidate other countries into giving him what he wants.

Additionally, Mr. Trump has imposed tariffs on India, which he has frequently labeled a “big abuser” and a “high tariff nation.” He has promised China and India reciprocal tariffs.
